Workplace discrimination and retaliation by the numbers

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission recently announced the numbers the federal agency piled up on behalf of workers nationwide in fiscal 2017. The EEOC said that 84,254 workplace discrimination charges were filed last year that resulted in more than $398 million paid to victims through litigation and voluntary resolution of disputes.

The EEOC broke down the complaints it received into 10 categories. The most common complaint of all: Retaliation. As you know, retaliation takes place against the victim of discrimination or against a co-worker who witnesses the inappropriate behavior.

Retaliation can take many forms, but is usually one or more of the following types:

  • Firing
  • Demotion
  • Pay reduction
  • Reduced hours
  • Negative work reviews
  • Being passed over for a promotion or raise

The EEOC said that a whopping 48 percent of all charges filed last year included claims of retaliation.

Other common complaints filed with the agency included the following:

  • Racial discrimination: 33 percent
  • Disability discrimination: 32 percent
  • Gender discrimination: 30 percent
  • Age discrimination: 22 percent

Also in the top 10 were complaints about workplace discrimination based on national origin, religion, skin color, equal pay and genetic information. In addition, the federal government’s EEOC received more than 6,500 complaints of sexual harassment by employers, managers or co-workers. More than $46 million was paid to those victims, the agency said in a statement on its website.

No matter which form of discrimination you have endured in your Milwaukee job, an experienced employment law attorney can help protect you, your rights and your career.
