Wisconsin judge accused of harassment, stalking, retaliation

If you drive north of Milwaukee for about an hour and 45 minutes, you’ll come to Fox Crossing, near the northern shore of Lake Winnebago. A municipal judge from the village is standing trial on criminal charges of stalking.

The criminal charges are just one aspect of an ongoing legal battle between Municipal Judge Len Kachinsky and the village regarding his treatment of a clerk. The clerk and village administrators say in court documents that he has engaged in harassment and retaliation against her.

Kachinsky says the accusations against him are the result of a “workplace relationship gone bad.” But after he was arrested and booked, the jurist was suspended from his bench duties by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

A related complaint against the municipal judge is also pending before the Wisconsin Judicial Commission.

In response to a restraining order the clerk secured against him, Kachinsky wrote that he did not harass, intimidate or retaliate against her. News reports said the judge has been accused in one incident of staring at the clerk for 40 minutes while making cat sounds. He also filed official reprimands against her for things such as failing to acknowledge his Christmas greeting.

The Appleton Post Crescent states that Kachinsky is a longtime Fox Cities attorney who garnered a measure of fame when featured in the Netflix series “Making a Murderer.” He was for a time the defense attorney representing Brendan Dassey, before he was removed from the case.

Those enduring workplace harassment and then suffering retaliation when they report the improper behavior should contact an attorney experienced in employment law litigation.
